The SWISH PAN is a very quick sideways pan that blurs the frame used as a transition between shots replacing a cut. It can be used to disorient us briefly and can indicate the passage of time and/or a frenetic pace of action. It”s also known as the Whip Pan or Zip Pan. In the first clip, THEY SHOOT HORSES DON’T THEY? Sydney Pollack uses the SWISH PAN to propel us from the tired desperation of the dancers to the murderous foot race. In Martin Scorsese’s RAGING BULL the SWISH PAN is used in the middle of a boxing match to indicate the quickly changing action.
