Dolly Shot

The DOLLY SHOT is a shot that uses a camera dolly or cart mounted on rails or even a wheel chair to move a camera and operator. Can also be called a traveling shot. We can dolly in or out, or dolly along side a subject, which is called “dolly with…” I do not call this a tracking shot.  For me, a tracking shot does not involve a camera dolly.

In these two short clips from Michael Mann’s HEAT, pay particular attention as to how he fills the foreground, middle ground and background in his dolly shots.  Very few filmmakers compose a shot as well as Michael Mann.
